Dr. Carlos Ballesta López was born in Tejeda ( Las Palmas) in 1947 Spain, son of a medical family,
he moves immediately to Almería, point of origin of his ancestors, where he
spends his childhood and youth.
He studies Medicine in Granada and he graduates in 1973 (he studies in just 5 years the 6 years of the medicine studies with excellent qualifications). Married with Angela Ferrer Rodríguez, woman doctor and paediatrician professor at the Medicine Faculty of Barcelona. He has three daughters: Mª Victoria (21), Constanza (18) and Angela (11) years old respectively. In 1973 he ends his Medicine degree in Granada, he moves to Barcelona where he starts his special field at the Digestive Pathology School of Gallart Mones , taking a degree on Digestive System Diseases in 1976. Then he starts his special field in General and Digestive Surgery as an intern in Sevilla, moving to the Hospital "Príncipes de España" in Bellvitge (Barcelona), when once ended his special field he forms part of the hospital staff.
In 1976 (when he was 28 years old) he reads his doctoral thesis ANTRO
PILORICO REACCIONAL (Gastric Disease), obtaining the maximum
qualifications Excellent Cum Laude Unanimously. In 1977 he forms part of
the professor staff at the Medicine Faculty of the Barcelona University,
first at the Anatomy department and afterwards as Surgery professor in the
Bellvitge Campus, charge that he is holding nowadays.
In 1983 as founder director creates VIDEO REVIEW OF SURGERY, official organ
of the European Association of Video-Surgery, review of surgical
specialities in video, which is published in english, french and italian.

In 1987 he is named General Secretary of the European Association of
Video-Surgery, and he is filling these duties since then. This Association
organizes every 2 years its congress, (the next in Brugge, Belgium,
in 2002) and it has branches in the different european countries.
He is the director of the INTERNATIONAL FORUM OF VIDEO-SURGERY, meeting that assembles specialists from different countries in the world with a great attendance of european surgeons (next in October 2001). In 1987 he publishes the book ANTIBIOTIC PROFILAXIS IN SURGERY. In 1990 in collaboration with Prof. M. Carboni, P.I. Red, K. Maruyama, etc, he publishes the book NEW TRENDS IN GASTRIC CANCER. In 1992 he publishes the book SURGICAL LAPAROSCOPY in which collaborates the professors R. Fitzgibbons, J.L. Alain, W. Pinotti, M. Cuesta, etc. In 1996 publishes the book POSTOPERATORIUM IN SURGICAL LAPAROSCOPY. In 2000 publishes his book Surgical Laparoscopy Strategy and Technic with the collaboration of: J.L.Alain, G.B.Cadiere, M.Catarci, C.E.Domene, J.L.Dulucq, R.Fitzgibbons, C.Hüscher, N.Kathouda, J.Marescaux, S.Morales, J.Nebot, R.Sampietro, E.Santoro, M.Saviano, M.Suarez, M.Trias. Since 1992 he organizes the Post-graduate courses Training Courses in Surgical Laparoscopy, having trained 300 laparoscopic surgeons from 12 countries and 56 hospitals. Since 1995 he is imparting in LatinAmerica the Courses of Video Laparoscopy Dr.Carlos Ballesta L¢pez for surgeons of Spanish-speaking in Asunci¢n, Paraguay (Courses declared of interest for Mercosur by decree No. of the Republic of Paraguay where it was done). He has imparted conferencies in different Medicine Faculties and Hospitals: Paris , London, Vienna, Lisbon, Madrid, Athens, Buenos Aires, Lima, Asunci¢n, Tel Avit, La Paz, Rial, etc. He has presented communications on a superior number of 250, in different national and international congresses and meetings in many countries all around the world. |

Author and co-author of more than 50 publications in different books and
magazines (Surg. Gin. Obs. International Surgery, Lyon Chirurgical,
Minerva Chirurgica, Vídeo Revista de Cirugía, American Journal of Surgery,
etc.).
Scientific Director and co-author of Laparoscopic Video-techniques. Author and co-author of FOURTY TWO scientific video-tapes about different subjects and pathologies. He has been rewarded with different prizes and medals and among them we must point out: PRIZE MEDICINE FACULTY OF MALAGA, 1987 PRIZE IN THE NATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE SPANISH SOCIETY OF SURGERY, 1992 INTERNATIONAL SURGERY PRIZE, Athens 1992 Medal Cuban Society of Surgery, 2000 PERMANENT MEMBER OF THE REAL ACADEMY OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY OF SEVILLA (SPAIN) FOUNDED IN 1718. THIS IS THE MOST ANCIENT IN SPAIN. He has been honoured with forming a part of 20 different juries, prizes and chairmanships of national and international congresses. In 1992 he studies a Master in Hospital Management of E.A.D.A. presenting the work Organisation and management of a Laparoscopic Surgery Service. Among the areas of scientific interest developed these are the ones which point out: On oncologic surgery: Gastric cancer, oesophagic cancer and rectum cancer. On this subjects he has promoted different works and doctoral thesis being a founder member of the European Club for the study and reserch of the gastric cancer. The last one published is Laparoscopic Billroth II Distal Subtotal. Gastrectomy with Gastric Stump Suspension for Gastric Malignancies. In pancreatic surgery he has developed studies of an special interest about acute pancreatitis (laparostomy) and nowadays by laparoscopy. Nowadays he is developing a programme in LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY with application on the different special fields such as: biliar, oesophagical , gastric and colorectal, with application in oncologic and benign pathology, having available a Unit of Experimental Research where he developes all the techniques and scoring for this surgery; with especial interest aplied to robotics and video surgery done in the CENTRO LAPAROSCOPICO DE BARCELONA at the TEKNO Hospital. |
